Description
In the early 1980's, my parents bought a camp at Toledo Bend. Toledo Bend is a partially man-made lake which runs along a large part of the border between Louisiana and Texas. By this time I was not living very close to them, but I do have fond memories of visits to their house trailer there. Dad loved fishing for large-mouth bass and had trot lines out for catfish. The freezer was often full of fish and the fish fries were delicious. Since it was located half way between Lake Charles, where my parents lived, and Shreveport where many of my mother's family lived, and was even closer to my father's family, it was a good place for reunions of the extended family. I remember walking among the tall pines, going out in the motor boat, and watching the sun set from the pier. I remember small things; table legs sitting in custard bowls filled with water to keep out the ants, floor air conditioner vents that the kids loved to stand over and watch their shirts balloon out around them, and Audubon prints of Louisiana birds on the wall. When I think of Toledo Bend, I think of my dad. I think of him telling me about the eagles he saw when out fishing in his boat. I think him frying fish in a large pot outside. I think of the pictures on his bulletin board of him and his friends holding up their catch. Here are two of those pictures, my father (on the right) and his friend Ed Ward. On this anniversary of my dad's birth, I remember and share with you, Dad's love of fishing.
