Description

The St. Lawrence River is a river that flows from southwest to northeast in the middle latitudes of North America, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The St. Lawrence River is the only emissary of the Great Lakes Basin. The river crosses the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec and Ontario is in its international border with the state of New York in the United States. Grand River middle latitudes of North America, the St. Lawrence River has a catchment area of 1,610,000 km2 (nearly 25% of the world's fresh water) including the Great Lakes, and a good portion the hydrographic network of the continent, it drains into the Atlantic Ocean by a distance of about 4000 km (1140 km if we do not take account of the Great Lakes). It is part of the 25 longest rivers in the world. It takes its name from the mouth of Lake Ontario at Kingston. From there, he moved to Brockville and Cornwall, defining the border between New York State and Ontario. It then passes through Quebec from Montreal (where he received the Ottawa River), Trois-Rivières, where he received the St. Maurice River, Quebec City and Tadoussac, a town at the mouth of the Saguenay. The St. Lawrence at this point has already become the largest estuary in the world and ended up in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to join the Atlantic Ocean. The river includes Lake Saint-Louis south of Montreal, Lake Saint-François in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and Lac Saint-Pierre between Sorel-Tracy (where the tides start) and Pointe-du-Lac. It bathes the Thousand Islands, the island of Montreal, Île Jésus (Laval), Île d'Orléans in front of Quebec and Anticosti Island to the north-eastern Gaspé, in addition to a large number of secondary islands. Anticosti Island between the St. Lawrence two straits, the Jacques Cartier Strait north of the island facing the Labrador Peninsula Gaspe Passage and south of the island facing the Gaspé Peninsula. Tides stop in Trois-Rivières (or around) (or downstream, or in the Lac Saint-Pierre) and the salinity of the water begins to the east (downstream) of the Île d'Orléans (salt and brackish to Tadoussac to Cap Tourmente). Il baigne les Mille-Îles, l'île de Montréal, l'île Jésus (Laval), l'île d'Orléans en face de Québec et l'île d'Anticosti au nord-est de la Gaspésie, en plus d'un grand nombre d'îles secondaires. L'île d'Anticosti sépare l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent en deux détroits, le détroit de Jacques-Cartier au nord de l'île face à la péninsule du Labrador et le détroit d'Honguedo au Sud de l'île face à la péninsule de Gaspé. Les marées cessent à Trois-Rivières (ou aux environs de) (ou en aval, ou dans le Lac Saint-Pierre) et la salinité de l'eau commence à l'est (en aval) de l'Île-d'Orléans (salée jusqu’à Tadoussac et saumâtre jusqu’à Cap Tourmente).
