It's those dag-nabbed aliens what done it Mike!! They go landing their stinkin' UFOs out there in the forest with absolutely no regard for the damage they are doing to the flora or fauna! ; ) I have heard somewhere before that the crooked, twisted trees are usually caused by a beetle that lays it's eggs under the bark. Don't know if it's true or not.
