Description
The Prince's Castle isn't very big, so when the prince or even the Emperor were in residence, probably most of his court was hosted in the houses nearby. While the castle is inside the town, this doesn't mean one isn't wary of external enemies and internal plots. The door, for example: there is only one door-cum-gate, the one you see here, leading into the small courtyard. Usually the larger gate was open to admit bulky goods for the kitchen or wood for the stoves. But people were forced to enter one by one from the smaller door inside the gate, stepping over a high threshold and bent almost in half in the bargain. The entrance is narrow enough to make me wonder whether they had to open the larger door to let a corpulent gentleman or a well-padded lady into the courtyard. Inside I suppose everybody but the guards of the prince had to leave their personal weapons to the captain of the guard at the door. Archers were ready on the wooden passageway to quell any resistance.
Here the beautiful fig tree is counterpointed by the painted creepers on the walls of the passageway, which also show a couple of hunters and stags among the creepers. As a matter of fact the castle looks more a wealthy hunting lodge than great residential mansion. The Emperors of Austria-Hungary hunted in this area until the First World War, when the province was lost and became Italian.

This is a sensational capture of the courtyard Sandra, I am really enjoying this series. It was fascinating to read your thoughts on how they had to be careful of possible plots against them. In some ways this lovely castle could at times almost feel like a prison to the residents.
