Description
This is a tribute to classic Superman, to help keep him alive in the face of unnecessary make-overs by DC and Zach Snyder. There are ways of updating a character like this for more cynical audiences without changing the core mythology/aesthetic, but I guess they're not willing to put in the extra effort it takes to strike that balance.
