Description
This image is dedicated to all those impacted by Hurricane Sandy and to everyone who did and will rally to help in any way they can. Friends, neighbors, strangers, first responders and everyone that extends a kind, helping hand.
There's still 700,000 out of power in NJ, including areas of my town. Looting continues and more and more people have returned home only to find there's no home to return to and are back in a shelter trying to figure out a next step. I can't stop crying from this destruction and the shell shocked faces of those so impacted. Please say as fervent a prayer for them as you've ever prayed!
How do you say how blessed you are? We made it through Hurricane Sandy, as did our home with insignificant, minor damage (very small tree branches and twigs in the yard). We were much, much luckier than many of our neighbors. Our neighborhood now has power and phone again, though calling attempts, both in and out (cell and hardwired) still gives sporadic 'no service' messages. We're right smack on the jersey shore, in between Long Beach Island and Seaside Heights. The destruction, damage and horrific images of this area, like in every area in Sandy's wake, is absolutely mind boggling. The flooding is beyond incredible and the pictures you see on television don't touch on the reality of the horror of actually seeing it and I can't imagine the heart wrenching of it being your life shattered by such devastation. Looters haven't wasted any time and I loved how one police chief flatly stated to a tv news crew about the looters: "You will be stopped!" Looters are using boats and kayaks to get to the homes still without power and after dark all bets are off, even crossing the bay to get to homes on LBI. Doesn't get much lower on the scum scale than that, does it??? We were under mandatory evacuation and close friends came to take me, my son and our 120 lb. German Shepherd to their home, which is only slightly more inland, but at least we were off the water. My friend's house is surrounded by dense woods and there were several very tense times when we watched the tops of fifty foot high pine trees literally swirl in circles. One of the oddest things I've ever watched! The house is more than three thousand square feet in size but there wasn't an area in it that we were *sure* a tree couldn't fall onto. Yeah, nervous to the max sounds about right, though my dog was completely at ease the entire storm. Go figure! :)
Hubby is a chief power lineman and has been working 16 hours on and 8 hours off since 7:00 Sunday morning (before the mandatory evacuation alert) in major storm mode. Those hours are for seven days a week until further notice. Because our house was in a mandatory evacuation area he spent his '8 hours off' trying to grab a few minutes sleep in his own personal truck in the power company's parking lot. That happened on Sunday night and again on Monday night, and, yes, it was Monday night at the height of Sandy's wrath. The same scenario for a dozen other lineman from that 'barn'. The company provided mobile beds, food, showers, laundry, etc. for the out of state crews that came to help, but *nothing* for their own employees. Yeah, definitely not sitting well with me how they're treating them. They were actually told they'd need to 'feed yourself'. Rather hard to do when there is no power anywhere and every business is closed and shuttered. The majority of the customers restored to power are grateful, kind and pleasant, but there are more than a few that are irate, scream in their faces and are downright NASTY. Please, people, these are the people busting their a**es to get your power restored. They don't set the policy or the rules, they only do what they're there to do: turn your lights on as quickly as possible. Cut them a break, please! Like I said, they're working 16 on and 8 off until further notice.
Thank you for your messages, emails and calls and please pray for and send good thoughts to everyone touched by Sandy. Again, we have been extremely blessed.

This is beautiful and I feel for those who were harmed in any way, and that includes the workers who have to take the full brunt of a different storm. People can be demanding and impatient when they lose the necessities of life, even for a short while.. I saw film of lines of cars not so patiently waiting for gas at a station that ran out of fuel before most could fill their tanks. It wasn't pretty. Best of luck to you and your deserving husband my friend. Seth

What a wonderful dedication to those affected in whatever way by the storm. Its hard to believe how people react to those doing their best to get power and other services up and running again.. Those people need to be the last to get services back. Am shocked at the companies treatment of their own workers the don't deserve to have the loyalty of the guys working 16 hrs a day with an attitude like that.. I hope they all look for new jobs after this is all over.. Looters need to be shot on sight there is no way that that behaviour should be tolerated one iota, maybe for food but that is all. I am glad that your place was spared and major damaged and glad you are ok.. take care my friend and stay safe!

Yeah it's a hell of a thing to lose everything as many have - I can't even imagine the pain.. As far as the pond scum known as 'looters' - I think a shoot-on-sight policy is called for. You really have to be incredibly pathetic to further agonize the storm victims by stealing what little they have left. Looters..... shoot the bastards - no questions asked! And those linemen have nothing but my admiration for what they have to deal with even on a normal day-to-day basis, never mind when Mother Nature throws a tantrum. Why in the hell would anyone be so freakin' stupid as to yell/scream at these guys? I'd be pulling together whatever I could find in the house to feed them... The way thier employer is treating them is beyone deplorable, though. I hope the company execs all are held accountable and get kicked out the door for that when this is all over. A very beautiful and moving work of art, Linda! I'm sooooo glad you made it through with no injuries and little damage! The victims are in my thoughts and prayers. My company's headquarters is in Ramsey, NJ, as well as most of our parts/supplies shipping. It's been interesting trying to get parts this week...

This is a beautiful dedication, I am sending my family the link to this so that they can view it. My family does not have electricity, heat or hot water. They had to go to a hotel and now they are looking for an apartment to stay in until the power gets turned back on in their condo. Some will be coming here to stay with me this week at least until the power is restored. I thank you for this image. There has been many sentimental items lost for our family that can never be replaced. The most important thing is that everyone is alright and on the way to recovery.

wow that is a lot of folks without power, it is sad to see hurricane came even if we thought the hurricane season is over, sort of late this time.
