Description

No, this is not the original scenery from "Gilligan's Island" Resembling a Palm Sunday procession gone wrong rather than an idyllic tropical isle, USS Peary (DD-226) is imagined here in the act of "de-cloaking" as it resumes it's dash south to Australia in late December 1941. Laying off for a day to avoid air attack in Campomanes Bay (Negros, Philippines), the Peary's crew camouflaged their antiquated destroyer with green paint and palm fronds, a "measure" that evidently worked a charm. Their anchorage was overflown several times by unsuspecting bomber crews. Ironically, this tropical island "getaway" is named after the Arctic explorer, Admiral Robert Peary. USS Peary was a US Navy Clemson-class destroyer, a "four piper" launched shortly after the First World War and which served with the United States Asiatic Fleet in the years leading up the outbreak of the Second World War in the Pacific. For the destroyer's bow and bridge texture I've added traces of the blast and fire damage from the air-raids on its base in Manila. I've been adding more detail to my Clemson-class model and having read up a bit more on the Peary I thought I'd try something different... from the "strange but true..." annals of the Pacific Theatre... Thanks for viewing and comments...

A great move on behalf ...well of whoever thought of it! lol As drastic as the 'splinter' camo used by R.N ships in the Atlantic (possibly by U.S as well..) Nice one! Rob

Spectacular! Brilliant use of camouflage if a tad artistic, well done. Nice bit of military lore.
