Description

While listening to NPR last week, I heard a story about Lombardi's. In the post Sandy darkness that enveloped southern Manhattan, Lombardi's was doing an amazing thing. They were making pizzas. Lombardi started as a grocery in 1897 and began selling tomato pies in 1905. They still use a coal oven to make pizzas which is why, in the blackout following the storm; they could continue to serve pizzas. There is a short video about it here: http://massappeal.com/lomdardis-pizza-hurricane-sandy-video/ Leslie and I went to Lombardi's (along with 2 other popular pizzerias) on our pizza tour. It was my favorite pizza mostly because of the wonderful fresh ingredients. The basil seasoning was wonderful. Tonight, areas hit by Sandy have been hit again by another storm and heavy snowfall and are still under winter storm advisory. My thoughts are with them, especially those without power. Thanks for previous comments and favs. I am making my way to galleries again, but I am VERY slow.

What a fantastic and heart warming collage Lucinda, this story made my day. It sounds like a wonderful place still embracing the past and helping out their neighbors in a time of need. It is horrible that these poor people were hit with more bad weather before they can recover from Sandy. I'll keep all of them in my thoughts and prayers.

Sounds like a wonderful place. If I"m ever in New York I'll have to visit it. It is great that they can continue to serve people with a hot meal while the area is so hard hit. Excellent montage too. All the elements of a neighbourhood institution are documented. And did I mention- ummmmm, pizza.....

my experience of New York pizzas, namely the Artichoke in Chelsea, just opposite the High Line, left a great impression on me, this looks equally impressive, my heart goes out to New Yorkers, they have a lot to put up with at the moment, lets hope things improve rapidly

Thank you for posting this interesting series and story behind it, dear friend. I too still am hoping the suffering of the New York people will soon have an end. That they will become courage to go on again. Thank you too for sharing your memories, Lucinda!

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie......now, that's Italian! Terrific color and detail in this cool montage, Lucinda! And my heart goes out to those who experienced the wrath of Hurricane Sandy and the followup snow storm.

Mmmmm...pizza! My father used to tell me about Lombardi's from his days as a boy. He and his friends would scrounge some money and take the subway from the Bronx to Lower Manhattan for a slice and the opportunity to get into some trouble. I'm glad to see they are still going strong. It really is the best. This is a wonderful montage. I'm glad you were able to have the experience.

Wow, look at the size of that pizza, I have never seen one as big as that. I hope it tasted as good as it looks. A super collage of this place and it is great that it is still going even during the storms.

Wow, talk about a blast from the past. It has to be over 25 years since having a slice of their pie. Wish they made pizza like that some where out west.
