Description

Thank you for stopping for a closer look. Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated. When we were on the island of Curacao we went on a tour of Hato Caves. It is a very elaborate set of caves in the side of the mountain. It was fascinating to see the formations and hear of the history of these caves. There was many parts of the caves where photography was not allowed, (even without a flash). This area had natural daylight coming thru a hole in the ceiling so photos were permitted. The history of these caves was amazing. They are terribly hot and the deeper you go it gets difficult to breath. Back when the islands were first being settled and plantations built they brought slaves from Africa to do the heavy labour. Many slaves escaped and lived in this series of caves, coming out at night to steal food from the farmers. It says a lot about how slaves were treated when you see they chose to live in such harsh conditions in total darkness rather than live on the plantations where they were abused. Jim

Yes the outside temp that day 84F but inside the cave it was 104F with no air moving at all. It felt like refrigeration when we stepped back outside after the tour.

Wild, hotter inside is definitely different, I've been to Carlsbad Caverns, Sandstone Caves in Missouri and Mammoth Cave in Kentuky, they are all cool inside. Must be Volcanic, was there any sulpher smell? Peace

The entire island was created by volcanic activity. Even now the island is growing a small amount every year due to underwater volcanic activity.
