Description
"HedgeApple"
This is the fruit of the "HedgeApple" tree [Osage Orange]. This apple is 4.5in in diameter and weighs approximately 3 lbs. They can fall from a height of 50-60 ft. out of the trees. So far, we have picked up more than 60 of these this year. One year I had over 300!
Legend says that they will ward off spiders and crickets if placed in a shed, garage or basement.
The "apples" ane not edible by humans, but my pesky squirels love to eat them, creating a mess in the yard.
The wood from limbs and trunks of the trees were often used for fenceposts across the prarie. The trees were often cultivated for windbreaks. The "Hedgerow" in my back yard has the original two-strand barbed wire fencing from the property section line [sq.mile] buried into the trunks of the trees.
The wood burns extremely hot, sparks, and is only safe to burn in a controlled combustion stove.

ah yeah that is the hedge apple we have been talking about...I used to have those all over my yard as a kid and Iplayed baseball with them lol...nice image and congrads to your 100th image.

Very cool shot. In my neck of the woods we called them "monkey balls" for what reason I don't know. I'v read that some Native American tribes used the wood from the base of the trees to make bows.

we have many around Dallas and they do create a huge mess. some people call them horse apples, maybe horses like them. superb capture

lordy I haven't saw a HedgeApple since I was a teenager...........so many thank you's for this one..........took me way back..............If I only knew what I knew back then............love,marriage, baby. divorce,dating,then re dating and marriage.............work,home eat, sleep get son off to school, hubby caught with another woman...divorce...........then re dating............worked at hospital number of years...many dates, many parties,.....then went on a blind date..........met fell in love..........re married.........working at hospital 3-11....he was a machinist 3=11..bought new home...lot of partying....went to Worlds Fair...then a bunch of Elvis maniac's went to his 15th yr anniversary death.......only 3 of us not a lot LOL....but had fun......fell out of truck rolled sideways on a hill in a hospital for over a month,,,,,,,,told me I would never work again..........got a hospital bed..........had to quit work....went on disabitly..........applied and got it............miscarried........hubby still working not same place.............his company bought out............we lost our home had to file bankruptcy.,,,,,,,found out i had breast cancer....yrs later now..found out had colon cancer............radiation and chemo for that one..now cancer is in my back...............backbone...right lung and upper breast.............. found hubby dead..............32 yrs marriage this month come Feb..had a heart attack.........but was told he didn't suffer...just that quick...no complain about chest pain except week before he had a tinge of his chest hurting..i tried to get him to go to ER he wouldn't....and I am a loss without him.........seems like he could walk thru the door..........he just wanted to work and take care of me..........bless his heart............He loved kids,,,we tried...and I kept miscarriage so he raised Bruce my first son by my first hubby...............can't find and haven't got all the tax reciepts...she said i was on the line now as not too...........Now comes 5 mo later we got a call Roger had died...........Bruce's dad...........he got pee ooed at his dad cause i had to call him for him to be there for Bruce's part...he found my hubby...hubby was up moms as she passed away and lots of hreak--in going on so hubby spent the night there.........at 8am he still hadn't shown.he was an early riser and I told Bruce to let him sleep until 8 then go check on him...he came flying back saying mom Danny is on the sofa rolling up news paper and he isn't answering me back I think he is dead.....I flew outta bed,...sure enough got to moms the poluce were there.......had crime scene tape up............EMS I was going nuts...............Police told cousin to take me to ER I couldn't see Danny like that..............I was hollering had saw dead people before...so got a shot of Morphine and Ativan.......wanted to admit me I wouldn't let them.....told them i had a funeral to plan.now found 2 more places on me.....see Oncologist about this 13th of this month.........see Dr about my stay in hospital have to get blood work if labs are low will be admitted again I guess.,my life in a nut shell.....................almost.....so there you know some of it LOL sorry about the novel LOL..but this hedge apple bought them all back at least a few.......we used to get these and throw them at people's mail boxes...........then squeal tires and book it LOL..never knew whose house we got..........as it was in the country and only had house number on it...no name..........just a huge dent in the old mailbox BUTT there was a huge write up on it in the paper...offering so much money to anyone who knew who was throwing hedge apples at the mail boxes we decided to QUIT LOL....so us culprits are now adults and I would probably write a letter to the editor doing the same thing.........just a sigh and a hair we didn't get caught..except if we had of my dad would of been the jailer ROFLO now wouldn't that of been sweet if someone had caught us.......... Am so tired after this 5 day stay in the hospital.........sure hope I don't have to go back in..............only decent food was breakfast........couldn't quiet hack the other...........but tried..... So once again thanks for the pic and the memories..we weren't bad kids just kinda mischevious..........and for taking my mind off my new troubles........
