Description

Ok, so these are not my greatest shots for sure but some people have asked to see the interior of the Blue Mosque. Even under the best of circumstances it is an impossible structure to shoot well because it is simply huge. In addition there are multiple 100s of people milling around, gawking, bumping into each other. Impossible environment to photograph in. Any quiet spaces worth photographing are occupied by people in prayer and I avoid photographing people in prayer in houses of worship. So the best I could do was shoot up to get the blue tiles but of course now you see the wires holding the low lying chandeliers. Argh. You cannot win. Ok, but now I want you to notice how well lit the mosque is. I am shooting well above the light of the chandeliers and still the colors are brilliant. Remember how I said there are so many windows because of the crafty dome design? This is what results from it. Unfortunately the best tiles are at the top, on the dome, and they get worse as you go down. They started the tiling from the top and as they got lower funding started to run out; so they used cheaper and cheaper tiles. Isn't it amazing how little has changed in our building habits over the course of the centuries? Still it is quite a marvel and once you have seen it all other mosques in Turkey pale by comparison.

In spite of the issues with shooting any 'great' pictures in the Mosque these are really nice captures Roxy. I see what you mean about the tiles but even the 'crappy ones' are nicer than the usual stuff we see and get today - unless it's artisan made. The overall effect is still splendid! Wonderful images :)

Beautifully intricate designs &, as you mentioned, very well lit. The wires really aren't a problem for me. Would love to visit in person some day...

It's hard to shoot in there, and everything seems to get in the way. You did fine. I'll never tire of Sultanahmet. Great pics.

it is beautiful, but practical? seems like a lot of wasted space and a huge heating bill - sorry, that's the carpenter in me speaking.

You know, in a strange kind of way, those wires add something to the photos - even if they simply act as 'leading lines' that take your eyes right to the peak of the dome. It's amazing to think of how much work actually went into building this magnificent structure. In spite of the challenges you got some great captures of the inside, Roxy! I'm a little surprised - I didn't think they would allow photos inside a mosque.

It's stunning work on grand level. I can see past the wires to get some sense of the grandeur. Nice side by side.

A feast for the eyes. beautiful mosaic work. As the heavens and the gold inlays are the stars. Dome building, cloisters in old churches and vaulted cellar are fascinating to me. The height is incredible. Under your conditions described, it has become a beautiful picture. Zoom is mandatory! Congratulate...
