Description
When the TBD-1 Devastator entered service in 1937 it was cutting edge in the way of naval aircraft. Nothing lasts forever though, and by 1941 it was outdated by IJN advances in fleet aircraft. Interesting to note, its main armament, the Mark 13 torpedo was not all that up to snuff, and apparently didn't get fixed till about 1942 just in time for the battle of Midway. According to accounts, it tended to run too deep (not too good for a torpedo intended to hit surface vessels)and was often observed hitting the target and failing to explode (kind of defeats the purpose of the dingus). I guess it's to the TBD's credit that the Navy pretty much used them all up in battle. By 1944 the inventory tally was zero.

This is another "I'm not sure" aircraft....I like U.S carrier aircraft but this falls behind the Avenger and Helldiver, which is a shame as it paved the way.As you say a very competent battlewagon let down by a faulty payload. Another very nice model displayed to your usual very high standard 10/10

Nice job! The TBD worked well as "bait". It was well past it's prime by the time of it's use. Our torps were crippled for the first part of the war.

if recalling correctly, torpedo had soft metal trigger, would bend instead of ignite. Saw movie once about subject. Great pic

Nice work and a fine tribute for a tired old bird.. All warplane, however bad or good deserve remembering because in my eyes, men fought and died in these sad old wreaks.. But news my friend! They have dragged one up from a freshwater lake in the U.S. Its a mess but they plan to restore it to its former glory.. It will be displayed in about a thousand years (lol) at Pensacola.. Rob

Great "golden wings" Devastator render! In the heat of battle even a dud torpedo looks intimidating enough from the bridge of the targeted carrier... got to give those fliers all the honour due. Flying Wildcats againsts Zekes was surely hard enough..., but flying Devastators...?
