Description
Left alone in the basement dojo, Clay dropped to his knees. He remembered all the mudras - the hand signs. Master Hanzo made him practise them until they were second nature. He remembered all their names, too. As he made the sign for 'Rin' - the Thunderbolt - and visualized it, it all came back: Master Hanzo sitting beside him schooling him, watching him. In the last year he'd trained before he was conscripted, Master Hanzo had taught him not only Kuji-kiri, but Mujutsu. There were many who considered Mujutsu a 'black art'.
"That is all dependent upon how you use it. I trust you will use it sparingly and wisely, or I would not teach you these things," Master Hanzo told him. "There are bad things coming, Clayton. You will be prepared for them. You will survive if you follow your good sense and discretion in how you use these things."
Master Hanzo...what a paradox he was - mild mannered, polite and good natured - but you didn't ever want to cross him. Thinking on him made another ache in Clay's heart: friends and family gone forever. Master Hanzo would tell him, "There is a reason why you live. Find it and make it happen."
