Description

I couldn't help noticing the body language of these two girls whilst I was having my lunch today. I wonder what a body language expert would make of it! Zoom is best on both shots. imagebam.com

I have been told that folded arms accross the chest is a sign of defence, building a wall, you can come so far but no further, not in the phiysical sense but in the argumentational. Great candid shot!

They look like the old women who used to wear curlers in their hair all week and a wrap-round pinny, and chat over the gate..but prettier. I don't think they like each other.

Folded arms - 'He snores in bed, and I'm fed up with it Mable!'.. The arms outstretched - 'But he has a willy a foot and half long and gives me...' etc! LOL ;-) Rob

lots of telltale arm folding, they could be about to break into a sea shanty

Maybe they are not upset with each other. Maybe there was a chilly breeze!

Arms folded close to the body is a defensive shield. :)))) Most excellent capture my friend. :)))) Thank you for sharing your lunchtime with us. :))))) Carry A Smile In Your Heart :))))))

(one in black) 'Didn't you get the invite to my Party?' (one in blue thinking) - hmmm, I have no idea, what she is talking about? (one in black) 'We had sooooo much fun - you must not miss the one next year!' priceless - Andrew, BB

Yup, Crossed arms against your body is a defensive position, the black girl is entirely on the defensive, while the blue is trying to break a little, showing interest in what her interlocutor is saying. In the second, the blue still maintains her position of interest and the black has opened his defense, possibly encouraged by that position, and is more confident. Or just in the first was blowing a cold breeze and both were cold. hehe :)

I think there is more to body language than can be captured in a photo, tone of voice, how they listen to each other, frequency of smiles, wind & temperature, and so on. But I do like their bodies, LOL, and I can speak with my eyes!

I’m in with the defensive position theories and I like the different POVs but it doesn’t change the tension that I feel.

Actually I suspect they are close friends. Wait let me explain. A lot of people have commented on crossed arms being a defensive gesture, which in and off itself is true. But to understand body language properly, you need to take into account all the information you are seeing. Also take into account location and age of the people involved. Different countries have different gestures, as do different generation to a lesser degree. They are also standing in a copy of each other. Their facing is slightly at an angle toward each other, not directly facing. This means one of them is complaining about something (IE not a problem they have with the other person.) and the other is agreeing with them. the woman in blue also seems to be touching her chin or mouth, so she is holding back on something, she doesn't want to mention to her friend. Second image is a conclusion gesture. Err I used to study body language a bit.
