Description
I got back from the war with my nerves shot and no employment prospects. On the day of my discharge, my old sarge took me aside and asked me what my plans were. I told him I had no idea. (I had no family to return to.) Probably just bum around the country until something turned up. He told me to stop off in this little back woods town down south where he had a place. He said I could stay till I got my head together.
I bummed around the country picken fights and generally getting into trouble wherever I landed till one day, after a particularly nasty fight, I remembered the offer my old Sarge had made. It took me another couple weeks hiking and bumming before I got to his town. Everyone seemed to know Sarge. I asked where he lived and got directions. As I was walking down this old abandoned road, a pickup pulled up behind me.
A black guy behind the wheel hollered at me, 'He kid! Whatcha doin on my property?'
My first reaction was to get mad, but I decided to cool it for once. I told him who I was looking for and that I had gotten directions from someone in town. He smiled when he realized who I was. 'Well, any friend of Sarge is a friend of mine!' he said with a big grin.
He introduced himself as Tyrone Jefferson. He said he farmed next to Sarge. They each had big crops of tobacco that were coming along fine and that if I was interested, they sure could use some help working the fields.
I said I didn't know what my plans were. I was pretty much open to suggestions and if they could use me for awhile, I'd be happy for a place to stay and something to eat. I hadn't eaten all day and could feel my stomach growling at the mention of food.
I hopped into the back of Tyron's pickup. He drove us down the road to Sarge's place where we pulled up in front of the house. It was a dilapidated, rundown looking old shack that from the look of it hadn't seen any repairs in a century or more, except for some meager patches to the roof and some tar paper over some obviously broken windows. There was smoke coming out of the chimney which indicated someone must be living there.
Sarge came out the front door about then and when he saw me, he came charging over and pulled me out of the truck and gave me the biggest hug I'd ever had. 'Geez, Sarge!' I said. 'If I didn't know any better, I'd almost swear you were glad to see me!' I said with a big grin!
I couldn't help but notice the big grin on Tyrone's face as well at this reception.
'Come on in, both of you! I've got a pot roast on! There's plenty for all! Potatoes, corn and some corn bread. Not the best but one of my better batches. I don't claim to be no cook, but I ain't starvin neither!'
We went inside and sat down to this hearty meal where I ate like a ravenous wolf. Both Sarge and Tyrone were grinning when I finished my third helping of meat and potatoes!
'Looks like this boy is ready to be put to work!' Sarge declared. 'Well, if you are willing, we can start first thing tomorrow!'
'If you keep me fed like this, you'll have to drive me off with a shotgun!' I declared.
Thus we became fast friends and comrades in arms that would last a lifetime.
Thank you for taking a peek! Your support is greatly appreciated!
