Description
At the Senales Archeopark a couple of young archaeologists, such as Tanja Montagner, helped visitors to understand how Copper Age people mande things. For example, they gave you a penknife, a hazel tree stick and strips of tree phloem (the innermost layer of the bark) to make the string. You can have a miniature bow in a couple of hours. This is Tanja checking Flavia's bow, perfectly balanced and ready for the string. I also made mine. As you can imagine, adults are those who enjoy it most: a father even tried to bribe us offering ten euros for our bows, which were better than his. But we refused to give him our creatures!
What is interesting is that Oetzi's bow was almost ready to be used, but he had never a chance to use it, because he was killed before he could finish it and his arrows. Only two arrows were ready to be used in his quiver. Oetzi was about 1,60 cm tall, and the bow was taller than him, 1,82 cm long. An experimental archaeologist showed that an arrow thrown by Oetzi's bow from 30 metres can pass through the body of an adult deer from part to part. The arrow flint point in Oetzi's shoulder blade was probably thrown from 100 metres or more.
In the background of the shelter you can see an oven for bread, very similar to the so-called Spanish ovens in the American Southwest. While the Native Americans also use them to bake their pottery, here they used a different type of oven for pottery. It was behind the wall in the back of the shelter. I'll show you it next.

Flavia's bow looks perfect - she should be in the bow making business. A fantastic photo and I like the brown tints!

Glad to know you and Flavia made these bows. I was thinking Oetzi must have been really tiny. ;) This is a really fascinating history lesson. I knew Oetzi had been shot but I did not know the bow was so powerful.
