Description
The circular pit structure in this photo is a kiva. Some info about kivas from the Mesa Verde website:
"Kiva is a Hopi word meaning “ceremonial room”. Kivas were important ceremonial gathering places in the life of Ancestral Puebloans – comparable to the churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques of today. It appears that every clan (made up of the extended family) had its own kiva for use during ceremonies and other social events. Kivas were also used as sleeping areas, so served a multi-use concept."
Though we weren't allowed into the kivas at Cliff Palace, I was able to go into one at another cliff dwelling called Spruce Tree House later in the day (photo to follow)...

I love the contrast between that brilliant desert light and those lovely purple shadows. Fascinating to see this!

I agree, a wonderful capture, the purples and violets shadows play the perfect opposite of the warm adobe and sun colors. Years, heck, decades ago one of the smaller sized kiva's was still covered and we were allowed to climb down, the air clear, cold and a taint of heaviness, light flickered through the ceilings with glowing light beams that danced when the clouds passed, a sense of beginnings and scacredness. Fantastic shot.
