Description

Here you can see the pottery kiln on the left and a hole in the ground to fire pottery in the open. The last method was one of the first used to make vessels. It was a method where the temperature was not easily regulated and the loss higher than in the more advanced method of firing vessels in a kiln. To fashion the walls of a pot, the coil technique was used, whereby a series of clay 'sausages' or rolled strips are laid on top of one another. The pottery used by Oetzi and other villagers at this time and geographical area belonged to the Europe-wide Beaker Culture. Another name is Bell Beakers, from the bell-shaped beakers they used. In northern Italy, Bell Beakers sites are spread throughout but have their highest concentration in Lombardy and western Veneto. In general on the Bell Beakers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaker_culture An academic article on the Bell Beakers : http://www.thefreelibrary.com/What+linked+the+Bell+Beakers+in+third+millennium+BC+Europe%3F-a0166308354 Unfortunately Oetzi didn't have any pottery with him, so we don't know exactly which village he came from. In order to have an idea of a vessel he might have used, you can see here: http://www.iceman.it/en/ceramicbowl#schluessel Thanks for your kind comments.
