Description
Kivas are still in use today by modern Pueblo peoples for spiritual ceremonies, though today's kivas are square walled rather than round. There are variations in kiva shapes & this photo shows an ancient kiva that was round, but with a keyhole like extension. There doesn't seem to be any definitive information about why kivas were constructed the way they were or exactly what kinds of ceremonies were performed in them - it seems to be mostly guesswork on the part of historians & anthropologists.
This is the last photo from Balcony House. Next up are a few photos from the third dwelling we visited, which was a self-guided tour. Unless this tour of cliff dwellings is getting tiresome?
P.S. I was in the process of filling out this form (I had filled out the above & the keyword field, but hadn't hit the Upload button yet) when we experienced a power glitch & my pc rebooted. I hate re-entering text, so I was pleasantly shocked when I brought up my Firefox browser after the reboot & everything I had entered was restored perfectly. Very impressive!

Beautiful photograph. I love the tectures of it. Reminds me of our trip to Brantome and the ancient limestone caves and cliff overhangs there.

The pilasters along the inside wall of the keyhole are an interesting feature. I am enjoying this series immensely.

So interesting, and quite beautiful. I'm not tired of these shots at all! As a matter of fact, I'm catching up in the galleries right now, and yours is one of the few where I'm making sure to linger over each image. I'm on the edge of my seat!
