Description
In a very hot week of early September these four people are building an experimental Bronze Age pottery kiln in a field behind the house of one of them at the northern edge of the province of Padova. They are the young archaeologists I'm working with, in the sense that they dig and I watch....and take shots. Unfortunately,a few days later they were occupied with a dig in a medieval cemetery and I coundn't see it finished, also because I went to South Tyrol. Now the field is either a quagmire or a frozen mud cake, and I have to wait for milder weather.
They are Valeria (secondo on the left) and three Simons. Thus in order to distinguish them we call them Simon the Elder (with a beard, on the right, a former student of mine), Simon the Younger (first on the left, still a student), and Simon the New (third on the left, still a student). Valeria works in a museum in the province of Mantua. Simon the Elder works in an Archeopark in the province of Treviso, at a recontructed lake pile dwelling village I'll show you next.
For those interested in experimental archaeology and kilns here there is a very interesting illustrated booklet by a scholar from Zagreb, Croatia, where ancient cultures were very similar to ours and in touch with each other.

Looks like just an excuse to play in the mud without being called childish. {;-) Actually, as a historian I love these glimpses into the past, especially the reconstructions. I hope they get to finish their kiln. It would be fascinating if someone could make pottery in it.

I love stuff like experimental archaeology and other cross-disciplinary sciences: real hands on stuff, and this looks like something I'd positively love! I rather like the structure of the kiln itself, and wouldn't it be fantastic to actually make the pottery and be able to keep a bit of it? I love the treatment of this photo; the color treatment is great. This is quite intriguing. Very nice.
