Description

Well, while 'Tailspin' was dragging CVE-66 to 'The Duck Pond', I flew the TBF Avenger off the airstrip, boy was he P'd off. Doctor Von Krupp accompanied me, along with Stan from the paint shop, he'd done such a good job on this I thought he deserved a ride. Everything seems to function correctly and we got back in one piece, so this will be off to packing, as soon as Stan does a couple more paint jobs he has in mind. The Avenger is shown here in the colours of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, where it was initially known as the "Tarpon" however this name was later discontinued and the Avenger name used instead, as part of the process of the Fleet Air Arm universally adopting the U.S. Navy's names for all American planes. In June 1943, future-President George H.W. Bush became the youngest naval aviator up to that time. While flying a TBM with VT-51 from the USS San Jacinto CVL-30, his TBM was shot down on 2nd September 1944 over the Pacific island of Chichi Jima, both of his crewmates died, However, he released his payload and hit the target before being forced to bail out, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for this action. Another famous Avenger aviator was actor Paul Newman, who flew as a rear gunner. He had hoped to be accepted for pilot training, but did not qualify because of being color blind. Newman was on board the escort carrier Hollandia roughly 500 miles from Japan when the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. TARPON...large fish of the genus Megalops, one species is native to the Atlantic, and the other to the Indo-Pacific oceans. They are the only members of the family Megalopidae. Fine looking image mate and love the paint scheme. Good to see an alternative to the more common US one :) Cool facts too,I knew about George Bush but never knew that about Paul Newman. I used to own an Avenger but that was a Hillman lol.

After 19-year-old George bailed out, he was rescued by a submarine and wound up staying aboard for a month...not a pleasant experience, but infinitely preferable to the alternative, one suspects... Didn't know about Paul Newman's service. Thanks for the history lesson.

Thanks for the reminders about Bush and Newman. Nearly everyone in that generation has a past history since the war was called WORLD war II. Sheesh! Such madness, and how many died in it, and what did it cost in resources and labour. Yet, it resulted in tons of things like this one. Now, with you up in the air in the plane AND that torpedo, Tailspin couldn't do much, or the torpedo just might have found a big, fat CVE target (with him on board!). Thanks for the nice image. I see Stan preferred the D-Day stripes in this livery. Am I presumtive in assuming this will be available at sharecg? Man, you're great at this! Keep up the good work! :-)
