Modeled in 3dsMax, rendered in Octane Render. Created with Helix Pro spline plugin for 3dsmax, by Joker Martini. The main math object in this scene is intended to look like a 3D printed sculpture that is made from some kind of clear, shiny plastic polymer. This render really pushed the limits of the render engine, and my graphics card, to extremes. Rendered with the PMC kernel in Octane, to 50,000 samples, with a deep exploration strength to penetrate the very tiny areas of the latticework surface. There's still a little grain in areas where reflections and refractions meet the depth of field, but overall it came out extremely well. The size of the texture on the chinese paper alone, for example, was huge (4000x4000), and contains a fairly large normal and bump map too. Just for kicks, I tried rendering this scene in Luxrender, and it crashed it continuously when calculating the first few samples. So I'm happy Octane even handled it to this extent, using stong DOF, and complex internal refractions on the material, with color dispersion. There's even some pretty caustics effect in the shadows, which was a nice surprise. :) Please enlarge for more detail. Thanks. More to come.
