Description
I went back yesterday morning and luckily the old engines are staged waiting for the engine that will take them to their new home at Frisco,TX
The world's largest diesel locomotive, 98 feet long
a Union Pacific's DDA40X, leads an eastbound
intermodal train at Hermosa, Wyoming, in July 1984.
Trailing No. 6913 are three new Norfolk Southern GE C39-8s.
Nicknamed Centennial after the 100 year anniversary of the
Gold Spike in 1969, these massive 8-axle locomotives are unique to UP,
and are powered with twin 645E3A engines that produced a total of 6,600 horsepower.

Norfolk & Southern is where I worked most of my life. And I remember these engines very well. Most of or all those big engines have 6,000 hp +, and I remember them well I rode them on road jobs at work, so thanks for the post and the memories. I today really miss working there. Take care! (Stan).

I love this shot of the engine. I bet those things would roll for ten miles from the momentum if you shut off the engines and disconnected them from the drive train.
