Description

The Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge crosses a canal in Thanh Toan Village, Thuy Tuanh Commune, Huong Thoy District. The village is located about 8km east of the City of Hue. Thanh Toan Village was established in the 16th century. The bridge was built with funds donated by a Mrs. Tran Thi Dao, the childless wife of a high-ranking mandarin in the Hien Tong reign. The tube tile-roofed Thanh Toan is an arched wooden bridge, 17m long and 4m wide. On both sides of the bridge length are two rows of wooden platforms and parapets for people to lean their backs against. Over time the bridge was damaged many times by storms, floods, and wars. But the villagers always contributed to repair, renovate and preserve it. 'In September 1991, the bridge was greatly renovated according to the old design and officially accepted by the Cultural Ministry as a national remains, a rare and appreciated beauty-spot of the whole country'. an amazing county indeed, most of the people (including me9are associating Vietnam with vietnam war i think we do wrong there is more to this country than the "small period of time" the vietnam war lasted.thousands of years of history here.
