Description
This is a reconstruction I made for an exhibition, using a number of photos to represent a type of Bronze Age embanked village of Veneto (northeast Italy). Usually these villages were pile dwellings on dry land, built on a higher point in a plain, on an artificial embankment, near a stream, usually surrounded by irrigation ditches, patches of cultivated land (mostly wheat, spelt, barley, emmer, lentils and peas), and pastures, and forest land. The composition of bred animals depended on the area, but it was a triad made of bovines, sheep and goats and pigs. These villagers usually had friendly relations with villagers living in the high pastures where they led their herds and flocks in summer. The village was surrounded by palisades, but there were areas free from huts, where to protect the best heads of cattle, and areas for the artisans'workshops. So this is a view from inside the palisade.
A village similar to this one, six hectares large (about 15 acres), occupied the area of the hospital in Padova, near a bent of the ancient bed of the river Brenta.
