Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

There are parts of 2012 that this could happen to and I'd just sit back, eating popcorn...watching, and occasionally giggling; there were good parts of 2012 also...and more apocalypses than you could shake a stick at! I never saw the world end so many times in one year! Amazing! This is a great shot too. This building never looked so good! Sometimes a building just doesn't come into its own unless it's going through death throes, and I can imagine all of the Chicago area UrbExers really sad to see this place go...it was such a safety hazard (even BEFORE) it closed, and it would seem that people were in the habit of dying there after closure too!!! I love the plume of dust, the bits of cement hanging on rebar...like architectural dingleberries, stuck in butt-lining fur (too strong an image?) And the crane just looming there is great. Happy new year and I hope that 2013 has more high points and fewer apocalypses than 2012. This is a great shot.

Timing is everything Corey! Great job. I'd like to take a swing at something with that big steel ball. Happy New Year to you...:)

Nice shot! You were in the right place at the right time.

Outstanding timing! I'm quite a fan of the "stand there and take a hundred pictures and you'll get at least one good one" school of photography, especially when it comes to things that move around. That's how I've gotten some passable airplane shots ... I just keep clicking until I feel like one more might make me sick. The technique generally produces good results. Happy New Year, my dear! I hope 2013 brings you improved health, much joy, and all the good stuff you can handle!
