Description

The weather is mostly cold here in California. Seems the only insect out and about are the very small ones. This is a small (4-5mm) Vinegar Fly hanging out on a moldy lemon that had fallen off the tree. They seem to love these things. Crazy how you can see bits of the mold that has gathered on the hairs that grow near the bottom of the eyes. I assume they clean off time to time and eat this stuff, though I haven't read up on that fact. Liked the wild Background and colors produced by the mold in this one. Happy New Year everyone! -Bruce

What a brilliant photo! Such gorgeous, red eyes! Such flies are the unsung heroes (and heroines) of science, and I'm quite happy to see such a gorgeous specimen of one here.
