Still re-living childhood memories...this one has always been a fave. It's strange how the further back you go with these things, the worse they are by todays standards..yet through a childs eyes in the early sixties it was astounding! stuff. With space flight of any kind in it's infancy this WAS the future as far as anyone knew. There are a few interesting 'quirks', one I love is XL5's 'speedo', as the speed increases the needle passes through the 'speed of sound' then the 'speed of heat' and finally the 'speed of light'.I'm not sure what the 'speed of heat' is, but given the time it takes to warm the house up, maybe that should come before the 'speed of sound'(probably before the National speed limit too :-).This is not a criticism, anyone who was carving wooden puppets on strings while thinking in terms of faster than light travel is a genius in my book.
I 'generally' avoid making models that are already available for 'free', however this one is special and as I've never seen one with usable 'Interceptor' missiles and hoverbikes (and maybe even a Robert the robot co-pilot) I thought it worth the effort.
Finally..I realise this Gerry Anderson stuff is not everybodies 'cup of tea'...but for now it's something I have to get out of my system.Looking back I'm amazed at how big a part of my childhood was spent watching Gerry Anderson shows...even today 'Brains' advertises Drench spring water...recently Virgil & The Hood advertised reactive lenses, Captain Scarlet has advertised breakfast cereal...so from one of my earliest television memories 'Four Feather Falls' to the present day, Gerry Anderson has been there in one form or another, with the exception of my parents I can't think of anyone who has been such a huge part of my life. For those of you who LIKE all things 'Fanderson'....you're in for a treat...
( For those not familiar with 'Fireball XL5' this is just the nose section, referred to as 'Junior', the whole ship is a 'tad' bigger...as you'll see...)
Right, I need to get back to 'The Plant', the Dauntless is due out later today (update: it's out) and we're building a new production wing...the place is expanding faster than my Christmas waistline :-)

very cool retro ship. really like the open panel going on. maybe we will have a retro future ourselves, and this year be better than the last few.

Stirling work on this one. My memories of Gerry Andreson start with Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett, so I didn't catch his earlier retro stuff. I wonder if they'll do reruns on BBC4 as a tribute?

Wonderful image and ship and good background story too. Thanks for sharing! Your Music Link for Today :-)

Thanks for sharing. Looked it up on Youtube because I wasn't familiar with the show. I think I was a tad too old to be watching it at that time.

Gotta love classic SF, this is awesome!

Super render of one of my old "grew up with" favorites. I've got the whole series on DVD and it looks better now than ever. I shed a tear when I heard of Gerrys death, one of TVs great's. I posted a fun render of the die-cast model a while ago.Look forward to more.

Well it's my 'cup of tea' as you know Neil and like you with the exception of my parents I can't think of anyone who has had such a huge influence on my life. This is a work of art mate, such detail is outstanding. I'd not complain if all you ever made were Gerry Anderson models, there's so many to choose from. Love the I.T.C logo, brings back such memories. Oh and the err.. secret project will be on monday now as family visiting has delayed lol.

Boy were you lucky! We had one TV channel and they didn't have this series. Come to think of it, I never got to watch the Micky Mouse Club or the Howdy Doodie Show either. I had a deprived childhood!!!!!! (Too bad I didn't realize it at the time). Nice modeling!
Yuroven
tried modeling the same, but no rocket pods...;) Alas, Mr. Anderson has recently departed Earth, for the next life.

A delight! A real delight mate.. I have to ask, where do you fine this stuff or it your own? (advise me?) I never saw Fireball but I did most of Gerrys other output, from Stingray, Thunderbirds, Joe90, Space 1999 (which I have just managed to get!), and even UFO! Loved them all! I'm looking forward to all output from the new expanded waistlin....Oh! sorry, Plant! lol (Still hoping for a Princess one glorious day!!!) Good stuff mate! Rob

Totally agree with you 100%... And the Fireball nose looks perfect. Bring on the rest!

Fine modeling Neil. Gerry Anderson has no history with me nor me with him but your description fires up my imagination. Let's see what was I watching in the 50s and 60s? Aha, nothing...we didn't get a TV until I went off to college:) My Sci-Fi was the real space race...Mercury-Gemini-Apollo and their Soviet counterparts. Anything and everything seemed possible back then. (and don't tell anybody but it still is today)

I am in the same position as bmac62 above. In my youth, sci-fi was only in the movies--and mostly B movies at that. TV came to Kansas in the early 1950s and, as a Seventh Grader in school, I got to see some episodes of Tom Corbet Space Cadet on a friend's very snowy Television. Nothing else until my mid to late 20s, then Star Trek TOS and Twilight Zone. However, I was an avid reader of science-fiction from the beginning of my Secondary Education. My teen years were during the "Golden Age" of science-fiction, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Nice. I loved Fireball XL5, "Ooh, Steve". ha. "Oh, I wish I were a spaceman, the fastest guy alive, I'd fly you around the Universe, in Fireball XL5.." The theme song was great.
