Description

For those of you not interested in the challenge, this is a picture of a Russian plane from WWII. For those of you who are wondering ... A few of you got this, and a few of you were close! It's an Ilyushin Il-2M3 Sturmovik. The truly notable thing about this particular aircraft is that it's flyable!!! Click HERE to see the Flying Heritage website, along with some marvellous photos of this plane in the air. This is the only IL-2 in the world in flyable condition. You can check the Wiki for a history of the plane and a list of places that have non-flyable IL-2s on display. Thanks for playing! :)

The first ever, purpose built, ground attack aircraft....ugly as sin and twice as deadly. The pilot sat in an armoured shell, for the version with a rear gunner, the rear gunner sat in a wooden coffin.....it takes time to train pilots.... Really fun quiz Tara, we must play again....but the real joy is in your unusual views on these things...top notch!....now if you ask Bill nicely, he may show you how to get your camera off 'macro' and you'll get a complete plane...LoL!! :-) Thanks TK..

It is wonderful that this is still able to fly and it is great that there is someone to look after all these old planes. We have a 'War birds over Wanaka' event that draws huge crowds each year with a lot of war planes and they put on a grand display. A lovely capture with the light here.

Yep - she's just waiting for that door to open isn't she? This really looks great in black and white, Tara! Beautiful lighting too!

Oooo, like the black and white...makes for some superb contrasting shades and tones. Big grins at Neil's comment. I'll go and post the whole plane for him:)

It's incredible that the plane is flyable. I hear there're a few in Russia but grounded for good. Very lovely welcome-on-board shot, Tara!

You've imbued this inanimate thing with a really human feeling of angst, as it seems to gaze out the windows with longing for its old flying days. Wonderful lighting, and truly excellent shot!
