Before Aseska, her great-grandmother Karissa Hyliss was the last person in her family to possess paranormal abilities. When Aseska's sorcery came into being at age ten her parents sought the help of an old family friend, Barasir Visse and his wife Persephone, both masters of sorcery. After Aseska learned to control her powers she ended up in the middle of an argument between her parents and the Visses over her destiny. Aja and Polos, knowing how Karissa Hyliss was persecuted for being a "witch" before her death, preferred their daughter kept her abilities hidden. Barasir and Persephone on the other hand, believed Aseska could usher in a "new age," not just for the occultist order, but for society as a whole. Soon however, the Visses deferred to the wishes of the T'Janis, certain that in time they would make the case of Aseska's destiny directly to her, if she didn't discover it for herself. Despite her parents' outright ban, Aseska continued to practice the craft in secret. Her plan was to find the Visses once she became an adult and moved out. In the meantime, she was befriended by Shion Charzide, the Princess of Masar. She had reservations about the friendship at first; because Shion was outgoing, loud, and a trash-talker. Compared to that, Aseska thought of herself as "just a bore." And yet, Shion turned out to be the best friend Aseska never expected. She was a good listener, and helped her deal with a gang of vixens who harassed Aseska endlessly through secondary school. After graduation, she joined the military with Shion, thinking her magic may be of some use to the Confederacy even though she had yet to find Barasir and Persephone. Aseska and Shion were eventually assigned to Terra Squad Two, under the command of Shion's sister Tianna. They were then sent to Earth to defend it against a Hux invasion. Aseska is amazed by the diverse cultures of humanity, but is concerned that "globalization" may harm such diversity as it's doing to her own people. As the Confederacy continues its expansion deeper into space, certain groups within Melani society are being forced to adapt to "mainstream" ideas. Just as Aseska embraced her occultist heritage, she feels others should be allowed to embrace theirs.
