Description

In the mythology of ancient Greece, Euterpe got the job of being a Muse from her parents; they were, in the business, after all, and so she came by it naturally. Her dad was Zeus, which isn’t surprising. He had quite a number of kids. Her mom was Mnemosyne—the personification of memory. She was the Muse of Memory, and—to this day—her name is the root of the commonly mispronounced word: mnemonic. Of course, Mnemosyne was the mother of eight other Muses: all achieved after spending a grand-total of nine nights with Zeus. Euterpe followed in her mother’s venerable footsteps; and so it isn’t surprising to know that when the job of Muse of Music opened up, she went for it. After signing the appropriate contracts and tax forms, she settled in something of a multi-purpose, musical muse. Secondary and tertiary responsibilities included work in the spin-off industries of “rejoicing well” and “delight.” After a few years on the job, she went on to allow other Muses to take on those roles, and focused strictly on her music career. Music was her calling, after all, and to this day, music is what she’s known for. Now that we’re in the twenty-first century, Euterpe enjoys a peaceful, though busy retirement: apparently, she runs a ski resort on Mount Olympus. From what I hear, it rivals anything in Las Vegas for the musical production numbers often performed during banquets, though—from what I have guessed so far—Celine Dion hasn’t yet performed there. In fact, no one I’m familiar with has performed there. I suspect it’s an exclusive resort, and only retired gods, goddesses, demigods, demigoddesses, muses, and other mythical beings hang out there. I also suspect that the entertainment pool is drawn from the background cast in the ancient myths. I found this representation of Euterpe sitting in a window with a wind-damaged screen. I liked the way the sunlight fell onto her curves and planes. I liked the color of the light itself, the color of the screen, and the colors and textures of the statue itself. I saw this little tableau today, and I couldn’t resist it. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

Like a painting on linen. Marvelous colors and textures. I assume the Greek Chorus performs at Mount Olympus on a regular basis. You really should hear their take on Lez Mis.

Torn window screen as classic art. Wow. It's perfect. You got just the right angle so the shadow falls just so, and the screen drapes exactly that way, and it's gorgeous. Outstanding image!!

Although a history buff, Greek mythology has never been my strong suit. Your opening two paragraphs have been very enlightening. And your skill in finding the unusual and turning it into art is once again displayed here. I like this very much!!!

The photo itself would have been enough, but with your writing it became an event worth remembering!

So, am I mispronouncing it when I say it as NE-MON-IC? Sounds like the only show to see! I bet Penn & Teller have probably been on stage there once or twice, even though it's a musical...

I love your take on the mythology of Euterpe. Informative and fun to read. I had no idea the word 'mnemonic' comes from this source. Interesting how you captured her. A muse does pull away the veils between composer and his/her vision. Perhaps Euterpe, even in retirement, like to branch out beyond music from time to time to inspire others. No doubt she got her playfulness from her father.
