Description

Girls day out shopping today so the guys went fishing at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife refuge, west of Delray Beach, Florida. It is a 221 square mile (572.4 square km) area that represents what Florida looked like a thousand years ago. I love this place and it is a great place to wander for hours. When a living snake sheds its skin, also called molting, this is the results that I found today. This process occurs regularly, as the snakes outgrows its old skin. Snakes will rub against rough surfaces to shed their skin. A shed skin is much longer than the snake that shed it due to the fact that the skin covers the top and bottom of each of the snakes scales. If the skin is shed intact, each scale is unwrapped on the top and bottom side of the scale which almost doubles the length of the shed skin. While a snake is in the process of shedding the skin, the eyes can become milky. This impairs the vision of the snake and as a result most snakes will become more aggressive during the shedding process. I took this photo just as I found it. Some info from Wikipedia. Do zoom. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

excellent capture, I love the pattern of the skin. I remember that in "The jungle's book", Baloo, the brown bear, warns Bagheera, the black panther, that Kaa, the python, can not see well and is more aggressive when it sheds its skin.

Gosh! I never knew about that doubling the length before, how interesting! I had a lot of shed skins in my stuff for drawing at school, but left them behind on retirement. Wish I had one now to examine!,,

I found a King snake skin, in my house about 15 days after Hurricane Ike. " I said... Where are you?" Never did find the snake, figured he went back outside. And yes, we were staying in the house during that time.
