Description

Our hiking group working it's way through a chasm. The young teenage girl in the foreground started the hike with two older companions. About 20 minutes or so into the hike, the ranger stopped the group & gathered us together to point out some geological features. He noticed that we were short a couple of people & the girl said that her mother didn't think she could finish the hike & that she had turned back along with her grandmother. The ranger had a panic stricken look on his face (I imagine he had visions of them getting hopelessly lost), said "They can't just go off alone!", told us all to stay exactly where we were & ran off back in the direction we had come from. While we were waiting, I talked to the girl about what had happened. She told me that her mother had leukemia, didn't know how long she had left & that the three of them were taking what could be their last trip together. Her mother had wanted to go with them on this hike, but realized after starting out that it was too much for her. After waiting for a while, the ranger returned with the grandmother. He had caught up with them, escorted the mother back to her car & the grandmother had decided to finish the hike with us. At the end of the hike, we saw the mother waiting in the parking lot & she was fine & in good spirits. So what could have been a bad situation turned out okay in the end...

That is some story Claude and this is a super capture. I like the 'manliness' at the top there!!

Good on her for attempting it in the first place. I go bushwalking/mountain biking most weekends. Have you ever seen '127 Hours'?

WOW - I take my hat off, to such a responsible and caring ranger! the hike along there seems to be a little tricky, you wouldn't want to take a wrong step and no chains there either ... interesting walk and image, BB BTW it was purposely done, to have the 'Noisy Friar-bird' only in the thumbnail on the front page and not to be repeated in the post.

A challenging hike for sure; I guess people need to be aware beforehand exactly how challenging! Wonderful capture, the people really add to this!

That's such a beautiful spot. I would love to sit in a place like that and lean back against a rock, enjoying the surroundings. Your photograph gives a very good idea of the terraine so far, and it's an interesting story. Wonderful post!

That is a tough trail and it looks like the young person in the middle wasn't prepared to jump! An excellent POV of this area and a large group!
