Is that the comet that "may or may not" be spectacular toward the end of the year? It's supposed to get very close to the sun on Boxing Day I think, after that, who knows... I hope it's not a chip in your mirror :) Do you know what the vertical darker band, four fifths towards the right is? Seems odd, unless it's just cloud coming in. Ignore my first para; just checked & I'm thinking of Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4). A quick google suggests Skytools 3 might help you identify it. I tried Stellarium but it doesn't seem to do comets.

I did a quick internet search, and there is the comet ISON, which is supposed to make it's closes pass by Earth on the day after Christmas. Here's shat they're saying about it's current location: "Currently, the comet is among the stars of Gemini (The Twins) and will pass only about a half-degree south of the bright star Castor on Jan. 16. But it’s still very faint and distant at 474 million miles (762 million km) from the sun, tucked just inside the orbit of Jupiter" I don't know if that helps or not, though.

This is NGC2261, also known as Hubble's Variable Nebula. More info is at the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_2261 That's a wonderful shot of the Christmas Tree Cluster... And the Cone Nebula (as well as Hubble's Variable Nebula) Some of those are pretty dim objects... How long was your exposure(s)?
