Description

This is another photo taken with a rental Canon 6D. I am looking for just the right camera for my next upgrade. I am liking this a lot for its sharpness and amazing low-light capabilities. Zooming reveals why I am liking this camera. .................................................. Now for my fellow aviation nuts out there:) Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Peregrine Falcon), or "Oscar" as reported by allied forces. Place in history: In 1940, the engineers at the Nakajima factory were convinced that planes with heavier armament and better protection were the way of the future. However, Japanese generals were influenced by their recent conquest of China and wanted a new fighter that was lightweight for ground support. Pilots who flew the Oscar thought it handled beautifully, but it was never a very effective fighter because of its slow top speed and limited fire-power. In spite of its drawbacks, the Oscar was used throughout the war in the Pacific, and were responsible for downing a large number of American planes. Ultimately, it was also the mainstay of the Japanese Army's "Special Attack" (Kamikaze) program. This aircraft: Entering service in January 1943, this Oscar was sent to Truk Island in the Pacific Ocean as part of the 1st and 11th Sentai unit of the Japanese Air Force. Later it served on Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. Shortly after the end of the war, this Oscar was found in dense jungle four miles from Vunakanau airfield on Rabaul. The plane had severe front-end damage from its final landing, but was repaired by Japanese soldiers with parts salvaged from a number of other Oscars. It now resides in Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field, Everett, Washington.

Mate I could literally spend HOURS in that place! I use a Canon 5d II and I've been very happy with it. There is now a MK 111 out which is apparently even swisher! imagebam.com

Or, rara avis, as it's used in Latin. Say, you deserve an Oscar, not like the above, but the Hollywood statuette kind, for this outstanding capture of the Hayabusa, looking in pretty good shape considering its history. Because of its slow speed and limited fire power, it's difficult to imagine it had so much success against American aircraft, unless they were the slower bombers and reconnaissance type.

A yes, the Oscar.... great photo. I used that machine for a texture in some uploads. The photos taken of it in the jungle show it was certainly IN the jungle. I guess there was little else for the soldiers to do but tinker around between air raids. Island-hopping probably does that to people.

Great capture of this aircraft Bill. I like the details it shows and I really like your detailed historical information. As to the camera. I recently bought a Canon EOS 60D. The price was right, it was on sale at Best Buy - and I bought it at the Luke BX. They matched the sale price of Best Buy and I saved the sales tax. I haven't tried it out yet. Thanks for the information you provided for the 'Storch'. Something new I learned. As to the find of the 'Oscar'. I wonder how many more treasures are waiting to be found in the Pacific - both American and Japanese. As to the museum up at Paine Field - you must enjoy special privileges. Too bad they didn't have the museum there when I was stationed there with the 64th FIS when they were flying F-102s.

Very nice, good luck with the camera search, I haven't done it yet but there is a business out here that rents cameras and lenses and I plan to go rent a few different lenses to try out before I think about purchasing them.

I didn't know there were any Ki-43s left! So happy to see you found this fine example and gave us a splendid view.
