Its a hobby... If Al Gore can set upon the world with a bunch of models with hockey sticks then why not me too? Though my children are wondering why, after the last cliffhanger with terrorists in the lobby and the SEALs already on the roof, it's taking me so long to finish the next episode but this is all part of my scheme, to show them that rewarding things can take time and that the journey can often be as fun as the destination.
I've been drawn to Poser by the timesaving possibilities of re-using characters and props. But since the centre of my universe, known in my day-job as the Indo-West Pacific, overlaps little with many Poser stock catalogues I sometimes find myself having to improvise. The discipline required to make models from scratch helps me to appreciate the effort that others invest into them. I'm as willing to use freebies as the next hobbyist but its a real godsend, free or not, when someone produces a prop or figure that by some chance belongs exactly in world I'm creating.
The images in this gallery tell no particular story. I've posted them in the off-chance they are of interest to others and to advertise things that interest me about the sometimes sad but often rich history and culture of the Asia-Pacific region. The works are usually inspired by ideas and thoughts that come to me as I trawl the web for inspiration, or they might be tests of techniques in particular software or outings of models and textures I'm making for the project. I hope you enjoy them.

I love the image, Briney, but I must admit that I have some problems with the thought that the "Betty" bombers would be flying at exactly the same speed as the torpedoes in the water and thus would be above them as they passed the destroyer. I would have put the bombers farther away, toward the horizon. I had not realized that these aircraft were used for torpedo attacks, but I did some research and found that they were indeed. Overall this is a great image; I just wanted to give you my thoughts on a possible improvement.

Call it artistic license..take your point. The torpedoes are actually in the foreground though the Betty's have already passed the ship, comes from the camera being quite low too I think... But I wanted the aircraft there and it's all probably too compressed in time and space and its also unlikely they'd turn closer to the ship to get shot at after dropping their fish... Thought it would all be too small if I spaced them out realistically.

I think it looks great and the artistic license is fine... The only thing that seems odd in a scene like this, is the lack of Flak? A Destroyer would be throwing a huge amount up.. lol But, your Ocean effects are top notch mate! Well done on that.. Rob

Very satisfying render, Brian! I like it a lot, and the object below effects are really effective. I especially like the composition with the clouds (they really work to enhance the composition) and the "just-a-skosh" off-kilter horizon line...perfect for a down on the water camera position. For me, the planes are obviously past the torpedoes, and starting to bank left a bit so I think it works fine. Personally, I find that for myself, I notice that in setting up a render, scale and distance may look odd for some reason and I double check the scale of the objects in relation to one another and also the camera lens setting. 28 and 35 mm lenses tend to distort a bit and make some objects look larger and 55mm sometimes seems to compress things spatially a bit..so, I mess around with it at the end till I get something that works better visually. Sometimes things just look odder than what we expect...it's usually us! All the tweaking is sometime the best fun!

Sweet scene. I love the submerged wakes and the smoke coming off the stacks. Nice job painting the boat wakes too.

Thanks for sharing. You have a lot of nice models to help people wishing to do World War II scenes.

Thanks for the great feedback... There is no post work on the wake and smoke, It's all as Vue made of it... Still not entirely happy with the wake, needs to be more splashy , so far it's just the submerged element, and object and a tiny "cloud" for a bow wave. The smoke seen leaving the funnels is an alpha plane though which then joins a diffuse volumetric object, it's the simplest way to make and control a tight smoke stream

Nice scene. I like the light wakes of the torpedos under water.

Close enough for Hollywood!

SWEET SCENE.....the planes do appear after the wake of the the 2 fish, and at the speed they would be traveling would be far past the ship when they hit ....great composition....love the smoke from the stacks
