Description

As an extension to Bill's comments, with which I agree. I chose to make this aircraft model, for its stunning look. But in reality it was an example of "design of committee". Early versions were underpowered because efficient engines were reserved for fighters. The second version, after the defeat of France, managed to mount more powerful engines (Gnome-Rhone radial engine). This version with a 30mm cannon was the most effective. In 1942 the new Soviet T34 tank armor rode effective against 30mm cannon so we developed a new version. Already available in a 37mm cannon effective against armor of T34, successfully mounted on the Stuka. Instead they chose to ride a huge 75mm with a heavy hydraulic damping system, capable of destroying any tank in the world. The result was an impressive airplane, but very heavy, with a very weak flight. The battlefield was deadly, but very vulnerable to enemy fighters if not possessed air superiority. In the last series only fought 25 aircraft, had no appreciable result. A notable example of the genius and human stupidity. Pilot by Max GrĂ¼ter in Google SketchUp. Heinkel Hs-129 available at ShareCG.

Thanks for all your great models. I will eventually get around to using them all. I love your scene here except you need some kind of blast effect coming out the end of that cannon muzzle.

Thanks, Pedro. Great update. The stories of the development of different types of aircraft is fascinating. This one is no exception. This case sounds very much like what we do here in the US where design by committee is the rule. Design a plane to the nines when a less expensive and more pragmatic design would do the trick much better in greater numbers and not break the bank. As you concisely put it "A notable example of the genius and human stupidity." You create wonderful models of these aircraft though. It's always a treat to see what you come up with next!

Letting committees design aircraft is a very bad move always, imagine if this excellent aircraft had fighter engines.. But, it was never to be, as with so many interesting and very dangerous German and Italian aircraft.. So many 'what if's'.. This is a great model! I am looking forward do making something with this, my friend.. Maybe you could make some more of the little seen aircraft as well.. Thank you Rob

75mm gun? cripes... I know they put a howitzer in a B25 variant for the Pacific but that was to kill ships... gee if the AA batteries in Europe started to annoy you... you could tweak the flaps and FIRE BACK at them?
