An interesting post Richard. I was fortunate to meet a code talker in person in Lukachukai in 2003. We were working there doing some work with our technical equipment to inventory the Navajo Nation's irrigation-related water resources. I was so tempted to take his picture after his wife mentioned what he had done in WWII (he was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa). He didn't make a big thing out of it (typical Native American - humble). But our instructions were clear, no picture taking unless related to the job - and we adhered to it to respect their culture and maintain a good relationship with them.
