Isopods are such interesting creatures! Their physiological attributes alone make them incredibly alien. Sea dwelling isopods (those giant ones now at home all over the internet) always look as if they're wearing Ray Ban sunglasses, and the land dwelling ones (sowbugs and pillbugs, both known as common woodlice) have the same sorts of eyes like sunglasses, and they breathe and drink in truly alien ways, and with parts of the body not commonly associated with breathing and drinking! Needless to say, isopods are among my favorite creatures; they're the most successful land-dwelling crustaceans around, and their aquatic cousins are both mysterious and spooky. Nobody knows much about giant isopods, and the "tongue eating louse" which infests fish is the only parasite that replaces the part of the body that it eats (tongue eating lice eat fish tongues, and then live in the fish mouth as a replacement tongue.) Needless to say, when I saw the title for this image, I simply had to look, and I'm amazed at how much like an isopod face this is! This is simply brilliant. I can't wait for Spring, now, when my favorite woodlice critters wake up and start walking around again. This is a brilliant image.
