Description

:) I know, this is an easy one for you aviation buffs. Had fun taking this photo and preparing it for a night flight. Very zoom worthy. .................................................. Yes, Indeed...we have three winners: pcaparrosc, Maxidyne and Deadly_Ernest are all over it:) This is a manned version of the V-1 Buzzbomb used as a "vengeance weapon" by Hitler against London during WWII. The idea was that this bomb was to be piloted as closely to its intended target as possible and then the pilot was to bail out. This was effectively a suicide mission. The only difference between this German design and the Japanese design was that the German pilot was not locked in. At the end of WWII, the Soviet Army occupied the Nordhausen area where these were built. In 1948, the Soviets destroyed the entrances to the underground missile factories. Fifty years later another entrance was found and restorers and collectors gained access to a cache of missiles. This Fieseler 103 Reichenberg was added to the Paul Allen Collection here in Washington in 2001. P.S. Unfortunately for German test pilots, every one was killed during attempts to land. It was determined that the stall speed was so high that all of the test pilots crashed because they tried to land too slowly...as Deadly_Ernest said, the Feiseler 103R was never used in combat. The war ended too soon for this desparate measure to be employed. ................................................. Here's a link for the Japanese version back in my gallery. Click Here

Fieseler Fi 103R, Buzzbomb or Doodlebug depending on how old you are and where you come from. Excellent post Bill and nice angle.

It's the Fieseler F1 103R, the later manned variant of the V1 - but not the original V1. I don't it ever went into actual operational usage.

Ah, the manned doodlebug. Sheesh. I read about them in the 1960's. Poor test pilots. Nice photo, Bill. It's difficult to see what's in the background, but to my eyes it appears to be another German jet propelled something-or-other. You'll have to post a photo of it as well, to quench our curiosity! Keep up the good work! :-)

As indicated above, definitely a manned camouflaged version of the infamous German V-1 WWII terror weapon. I thought it was a couple of leopard sharks at first. Great POV and clarity in this one, Bill.

Well, at first I was going to say it was a V1 Buzz Bomb...... but then I saw the cockpit, so I think Deadly_Ernest is most likely correct. Whatever it is, you got a great shot of it, Bill!

Well I'm late, because of my damned PC! Grrrr! But others have it, the Fieseler Fi 103R and it would take a VERY brave soul to pilot one if you ask me.. The Germans never had suicide pilots and the like, no, these guys were actually meant to bail out after aiming it at the target... The idea was sound BUT look at that intake! I suspect allot of pilots would die very quickly if it was brought into service.. Great shot Bill.. Rob

I am late too, but I also knew it was a buzzbomb Bill, but didn't know they made manned versions. Just finished one of W.E.B. Griffin's books about the OSS and in it they deal with the pending invasion of Sicily and there is mention of the V 1 and Hitler's intentions of targeting London. In the book they discuss the possible range, effectiveness etc. Allen Dulles is part of the OSS at the time, he was then area director of the OSS and stationed in Bern.
