Description
This is an American National Monument in Wyoming and is a religious symbol to the American Indians.
I have copied over yesterdays info and would like to add that this formation is exactly like the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland although that one has collapsed. Also Tara spoke of seeing it from many miles distance.
About 50 million years ago molten magma was forced into sedimentary rocks above it and then cooled underground. As it cooled it contracted and fractured into columns. Over millions of years erosion of the sedimentary rocks exposed Devils Tower. The tower today rises 867 feet (approx 290M) from its base and 5,112 feet above sea level. The area of its top is 1.5 acres, the diameter of its base is 1000 feet. Sage grows atop and there is a family of ground squirrels there too.
Zoom works well.

in Wyoming there is also a place called Devil's Hole. I have not seen it but seen the exit for it on my drive through Wyoming. my mother told me about it, but she only heard stories also another sharp landscape

It appears to be right near the road, I know it must be quite a ways off. Nice shot.

Also this view from a distance is impressing, as the info is too, Jeff. It's so strange to see it, 'as at once' coming up out of this land.

The tower is the the remains of a volcanic neck. Legend has it that a bear chased a native American up there, and today we see the claw marks. In truth the magma contracted on cooling and caused long vertical fractures in a hexagonal patern when viewed from above. The Giants Causeway fractures are a good analogy. In 1938(?) a fellow parachuted onto the top of the Tower. He was stuck until the Crook County Sheriffs Dept. used boards driven into the vertical cracks as a ladder The low humps seen on the skyline to the left of the tower are the Bearlodge Mountains, also volcanic intrusives. The softer (mostly Jurassic age) sediments have been eroded around the Tower by the Belle Fourche River, which flows northeast.

The formation of this structure totally amazes me. The rock cycle is really a phenomenon to be, the way over so many millions of years it changes and molds into something of it's own, and it keeps changing with time. A fantastic view, and Thank you for the information!

Great capture. I have been there and it is a favorite climbing spot - or at least it was. There are a whole bunch of Prairie Dogs colonies there - and they are protected by law. In the old days they (the prairie dogs) used to be shot by ranchers because horses had a tendency to brake their legs if they stepped into them!

Very interesting place and very informative description! Is this the place were they made the film "Close encounters? I understand that this was and is a mystic or holy place for indians or others.
