Description
Bhutan is a nation proud of its traditions and determined to preserve them. The outside of all homes must maintain the customary look of eighteenth century Bhutanese architecture and citizens must wear traditional Bhutanese dress unless engaged in heavy work.
Despite all this tourism brings inevitable changes, slow as they might be. Bhutanese are champions of the environment. If you go trekking in the mountains you must hire a guide and bring out all waste matter with you. All waste matter.
It was, therefore, not surprising to see a sign admonishing us to "Keep Wangdue Clean". More interesting was seeing an invitation to a 'dance party' where you could enjoy a 'coco' cola. You will notice that the locals have picked up aspects of Western culture where the men pay but the ladies are free.

Interesting! I remember a tavern that had two doors, one labelled "Entrance" the other "Women With Escorts." They both opened to the same room!

I was curious too, so I looked it up, "Wangdue Phodrang District previously spelled "Wangdi Phodrang" is a dzongkhag (district) of central Bhutan." The joy of Google and Wikipedia. I love how you capture all this fun stuff on your travels. Good super hit? I'd have to pass on the coco-cola nite. I really hate soda. Fun capture and narrative!

I like seeing unfamiliar cultures. It makes me wonder about my own. One thing I know ... a typical weather forecast up here will mention the chance of "sun breaks," and everyone from somewhere else thinks that's weird, so I guess that's one of 'em. :)
