Zumindest dem Namen stand der Heilige Valentin Pate. Meist wird die Tradition auf die Sage des italienischen Bischofs Valentin von Terni zurückgeführt. Der Sage nach soll Bischof Valentin, der im dritten Jahrhundert nach Christus gelebt haben soll, begeisterter Gärtner gewesen sein und den verliebten jungen Menschen, die an seinen Klostergärten vorbeigingen, eine Blume geschenkt haben. Zudem habe er Verliebte christlich getraut. Das allerdings sei ihm zum Verhängnis geworden, denn das missfiel dem damaligen Kaiser Claudius. Er brauchte tüchtige Soldaten für seine Armee und keine familientreuen Ehemänner. Bevor Bischof Valentin enthauptet wurde, soll er der Tochter seines Gefängniswärters noch einen Liebesbrief geschrieben haben.
Der genaue Todestag des Heiligen Valentin ist nicht bekannt. Der Sage nach, soll es der 14. Februar 269 gewesen sein. Die Vermutung liegt nahe, dass die Katholische Kirche den Todestag von Valentin mit einem Feiertag im alten Rom verknüpft hat. Damals war der 14. Februar Feiertag zu Ehren von Juno, der Göttin der Ehe und der Geburt. Schon damals sollen die Frauen an diesem Tag Blumen erhalten haben.

At least the name was Saint Valentine inspiration. Usually the tradition is traced back to the legend of the Italian Bishop Valentine of Terni. According to legend, Bishop Valentine, said to have lived in the third century AD, have been an avid gardener and have the amorous young people who passed on his monastic gardens, given a flower. In addition, he had married a Christian lover. This, however it proved fatal, because that displeased the former emperor Claudius. He needed good soldiers for his army and no family faithful husbands. Before Bishop Valentine was beheaded, he is said to have the daughter of his jailer's even written a love letter.
The exact date of death of St. Valentine is not known. According to legend, it is the 14th February 269 have been. The assumption is that the Catholic Church has linked the death of Valentin with a holiday in ancient Rome. At that time was 14 February holiday in honor of Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth. Even then the women should have received that day flowers.

Happy Valentines Day. Und wer schenkt wem ein Rose? Danke für die Infos. Leider ist der Tag heute schon sehr viel Kommerz. Aber man kann es ja auch anders machen. Eine kleine wahre Geschichte: Vor vielen Jahren, zu DDR-Zeiten war Valentinstag noch nicht so in, bin ich mit meinem Mann an einem Blumenladen vorbeigekommen. Ich bin einfach mit ihm rein und habe ihn eine Rose gekauft. Seinen roten Kopf und Verlegenheit erinnert mich jedes Jahr wieder. ;-)))

People rushing by. The noise of traffic. But for this one moment none of that exists. For this one moment there are only these two people in the world and this one perfect rose. You might think I like this very much, Sonja. You would be correct. A beautiful Valentine's Day image. Menschen eilen vorbei. Der Lärm des Verkehrs. Aber für diesen Moment nichts davon existiert. Für diesen einen Moment gibt es nur diese beiden Menschen in der Welt, und eine perfekte Rose. Man könnte denken, Ich mag dieses sehr viel, Sonja. Sie wäre richtig. Ein schönes Valentinstag Bild.

This is a good story for this Saint and the one that I prefer. You capture a sweet moment that would well depict his own actions, though I suspect the climate was milder where he lived :-)
