Description

The safety pin has a humble but long story, and it represents an item which started its story in the second millennium BC, during the Bronze Age, and is still around after four thousand years. What a success! Archaeologists call this early type of safety pin a violin bow fibula (fibula is a Latin word for brooch). In Italy the metallurgical center of Peschiera sul Garda (Verona), a pile dwelling on the shores of the Garda Lake between Veneto and Lombardy was responsible for the production of this model, which spread all over Europe and can be found fastening the garnments of many wealthy dead people. In fact, once upon a time sartorial elegance meant having a great number of fibulae and long pins in precious metals fastening one's clothes, which were not or only partially fastened by stitching. These are Peschiera violin bow fibulae made with a copper sheet forged by hammering by Franco. Thanks for your kind comments.

It was really nice reading your commentary and introduction to the fibulae that the Romans, just as the Gauls ( in the country I'm living in !) used to wear almost two thousand years ago.Thank you for sharing this beautiful and fascinating photo.

non ho parole! io quando posso riesco solo a collezionare le storie che racconti perchè non riesco veramente a ricordare nulla del passato, sembra quasi che un passato io non l'abbia mai avuto. E' una meravigliosa foto e storia, Sandra. Complimenti :))
