Description

All right class, we are about to begin today’s lesson so pay attention. There may be questions after. The Nimalung Festival (Tshechu) is one of the most important celebrations in Bhutan since it takes place at the Kurje Lhakhang, the official name of the Jakar Dzong. Kurje Lhakhang is the sacred site in Bhutan where Guru Padmasambhava (Rinpoche in Tibetan) practiced meditation on his first visit to Bhutan in AD 746. It is the earliest Buddhist site in the country. Padmasambhava, meaning "the Lotus-Born," was a Tibetan sage who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, Tibet and neighboring countries in the 8th century AD. The Guru was invited to Bhutan by Sendah Gyab, the local ruler, for his help in overcoming evil spirits that had been oppressing the people. His mission included retrieving the king's soul which had been taken by the king’s guardian deity Shelging. During his struggles Guru Padmasambhava spent time meditating in a cave called Dragmar Dorji Tsegpa, or "red colored cave". Upon defeating the evil spirits, he left imprints of his body in the cave. The site is now the Kurje Lhakhang, or Temple of Imprints. While we marveled at this history we saw movement on the roof of the main building (see my last post). A team of monks was struggling with something and, as we watched, the front of the building began to disappear. In a few minutes it was replaced by this.

Impressive, majestic scene. I have always loved this kind of art. For those who may be visiting NYC at some point, there is an unusual museum - the Rubin Museum of Art - that specializes in art of the Himalayas & has a great collection...
