Outside the bailiff's house a noise is heard in the night, something is next to the house moving the left over lumber. Mists gather in the swamp as the night deepens -- as the noise continues the bailiff goes outside to check on the intruder, axe in one hand and lantern in the other. As he pads over the parched earth he peers in the gloom and approaches the pile of lumber cautiously. The rugs, forgotten on the line, waver slightly in the nearly still air.
