Your cat in a hat series has been just grand. First, your portraits of animals are superb, so the cat part will always be sensual and also very sensitive. Secondly, your portrait of floral nature is equally superb, and it will always add a sensuous illuminated world to the cat. And it's a joy and surprise to see how you combine the two: In play? In seriousness? For a blend of the two worlds? Or will they contrast? Etc...I saw a lot of play in this series: In some cases, the cat looks almost bemused that it's wearing its huge opulent crown. That, alone, is precious. In this piece, the cat (as you write in your delicate opening poem) is contented. In fact he seems to be bowing in blissful surrender to this opulent thing on top of him. It really is a meeting of two worlds, because the hat a hat but also a small landscape. (The waterfall helps that, for sure.) And the cat is all reception and humility towards it, both in posture as well as in the gentle flow of his coat. I love how you made a 'bonnet' out of the leaves that cover his forehead. It flares out in just the right proportions. And you have a background of soft fronds and leaves, and inner lights that seem to glow from a world inside them or behind them (that's really beautiful). And the flowers on the hat itself are in sharp contrast, very defined lines (the feathers add to that) and an acute sense of the contrasts that make good bouquets. (Have you design bouquets? I ask that because this isn't a haphazard gathering.) The bird blends perfectly, as if it were one of the flowers; as do the feathers and butterfly, etc. And the waterfall's a surprise, even though you mention it in your poem: It's a soft 'center' to the bouquet, almost like it's holding the bouquet together. (More fine work!) Finally, the flowers around the center---on the edges, that is---are beautiful islands, each. What cat wouldn't be contented? What's delightful about this series is that the cat so often is happy but still seems like a kid wearing a beautiful gown, and delighted with it but still a little awkward/embarrassed because they haven't fully absorbed the glory that they're wearing. Innocent, in other words; that's what I'm trying to say. You capture it in a number of these paintings. A beautiful piece.
