i do that lots of times especially when using finger and toenails not many vendors add nail mats to their characters.

Oh indeed, I do that a lot. Many skin textures may have too much make up which does not always work for a scene. So I bring in a texture with less and then tint it a little to approximate the original MAT. I also find just changing the hair and eye colour can have a strong effect on character.
