So interesting to see that video! I didn't realize they put in stakes. I'd read a description many years ago of a man maintaining his hedge in Wales, and I seem to recall that he used only the plants themselves. Might be a different technique, or I might be totally wrong! :P I feel quite educated now, which is a good way to start the morning. Thanks!

Fascinating. I never knew the technique... We (the armies of WWII) had one heck of a time bulldozing through the hedgerows in France after D-Day to push the German army back out...

Tara is right, there are many regional techniques and some don't use any stakes.

A captivating sight, Dear Andrea! Fantastic detail and clarity that captures every fine outline and curve of this technique! I also really like the mood here! Wonderful subject and presentation!

We are using a similar technique here for our wilted Heliconias and provide support for the new growth of flowers, instead of chopping them down at the end of each season, sort of plaiting like hair. BB

A lovely lead in, the twisted "handrail" is a stylish touch! To think it was to give farm labourers work in the winter. Pride in workmanship is certainly a rarer commodity today.

That is a work of art and a lot of work to weave in the cut branches.
