Description
These are some Venetic votive plaques made by Franco. They are remarkable copper copies of votive bronze originals. The small ones, mostly showing processions of women and warriors are from a shrine in Vicenza , the large plaque with a horse and a dedication in Venetic is from the sanctuary of Lagole, Belluno, and the disk is one of four similar disks found in a shrine in Montebelluna, Treviso. There is also a wide-brimmed guy with a mantle (that Franco was scratching in a previous posting), and a series of small Herculeses. The horse witnesses the cult of the horse the Venetkens shared with most Indo-European peoples. The disk is very interesting. It shows a goddess in a Venetic female dress, with a veil, embroidered skirt and bootlets. She holds a Retic key and symbols connected with the Other World and winter: the dog, a bird, possibly a raven, ivy leaves and berries, and a flower (different in the other disks), that may be an opium poppy, which was cultivated since neolithic times in the area. The poppy was possibly connected with the practice of dreaming what ailment affected a patient and what cure could be useful, as well as with orgiastic rituals in the woods.
Thanks for your kind comments.
